Here’s a pressing that doesn’t surface often Thelma Houston’s “Any Way You Like It” on Canadian Tamla from 1976. While Houston is best remembered for her powerhouse cover of Harold Melvin’s “Don’t Leave Me This Way,” which became a disco anthem the following year, this album captures her in a fascinating transitional moment. She was moving away from her earlier gospel-influenced soul work toward the more dance-oriented sound that would define her biggest commercial success. The album showcases her remarkable four-octave range across a mix of sultry ballads and uptempo funk numbers that bridge the gap between classic Motown soul and the emerging disco movement.
