Released in November 1982, Hello, I Must Be Going! was Phil Collins second solo album, following the success of Face Value. The album reflected Collins emotional state following his divorce, with darker lyrical themes and a more aggressive tone on tracks like I Dont Care Anymore and Do You Know, Do You Care. Despite its introspective content, the album also featured upbeat moments, most notably the Motown-inspired cover of You Cant Hurry Love, which became a No. 1 hit in the UK.

The album was co-produced with Hugh Padgham, whose gated reverb drum sound became a Collins signature.
