Here’s a pressing that doesn’t surface very often Marie-Lynn Hammond’s “Vignettes” on Black Tie Records from 1983. Hammond was already well-established in Canadian folk circles by this point, having been part of the influential duo Stringband in the early ’70s before carving out her distinctive solo path. What makes this album particularly compelling is how it captures Hammond at her most experimental, weaving together English and French vocals with worldly instrumentation that hints at her later explorations into Latin and European folk traditions. The Black Tie label was a small Canadian independent that had a brief but notable run, and they gave Hammond the creative freedom to craft something genuinely unique during an era when folk music was becoming increasingly polished and commercial.
