Here’s a fascinating piece of Canadian folk history that most collectors have never encountered. “A” Ukuleles Of Halifax were part of the early 1970s Maritime folk revival, emerging from Nova Scotia’s vibrant acoustic music scene during a time when traditional Celtic and Acadian influences were blending with contemporary folk sensibilities. The group’s name wasn’t just clever wordplaythey genuinely helped popularize the ukulele in Atlantic Canada, years before the instrument’s later mainstream resurgence. Their approach was surprisingly sophisticated, incorporating complex fingerpicking patterns and multi-part harmonies that elevated the humble uke far beyond its typical campfire associations.
