This Canadian pressing was released in 1980 on True North Records. Avoid Freud was recorded at Manta Sound in Toronto and produced by Gene Martynec, who had previously worked with the band on their early recordings. The album captures Rough Trades blend of new wave, artrock, and cabaretinfluenced performance, built around Carole Popes vocal style and Kevin Staples arrangements. High School Confidential, one of the bands most widely recognized songs, received significant airplay in Canada and is noted for its openly queer lyrical content, which was uncommon in mainstream Canadian rock at the time. The album reflects the groups Torontobased scene and their association with the independent Canadian music movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
